Why AI Is Increasing RAM and Smartphone Prices

The rapid growth of AI has increased global demand for memory, leading to shortages and rising RAM prices. At the same time, smartphones now require higher RAM (8GB–12GB) to support AI features, which increases manufacturing costs. However, AI is not the only factor—5G, new chipsets, AMOLED displays, camera sensors, and higher R&D costs also contribute to higher smartphone prices.
Why AI Is Increasing RAM and Smartphone Prices
In recent times, the prices of new smartphones in the market have increased noticeably. At the same time, RAM (memory) prices are also rising. Many people may feel that companies are intentionally increasing prices. However, one of the main reasons behind this trend is the rapidly growing global usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Especially, AI data centers are purchasing huge amounts of memory, which is creating pressure on the overall memory market.

AI models require much more memory than regular mobile apps. Features such as chatbots, photo enhancement, live translation, and voice assistants work using large data models. That is why a major portion of the world’s memory production is now being used for AI servers and data centers. One important point here is that AI companies mainly buy HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) and server memory like DDR5. Mobile phones use a different type of memory called LPDDR. However, since the same manufacturers (Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron) manage production capacity, shifting more factory output toward AI memory can indirectly impact mobile RAM prices as well.

RAM production cannot increase overnight. Building new semiconductor factories takes years. So when demand rises suddenly, shortages occur in the market. This leads to higher RAM prices. When RAM becomes more expensive, a key part of smartphone manufacturing cost increases. Companies cannot absorb this extra cost completely, so the final burden reaches the consumer. Also, as AI features become common in smartphones, RAM requirements have increased. Earlier, 4GB was enough, but now 8GB–12GB has become the standard. This means each phone requires more memory, which further increases production cost and pricing.

Another important point is that AI is not the only reason behind rising smartphone prices. New chipsets (Snapdragon/Dimensity), 5G modems, AMOLED displays, camera sensors, and the heavy R&D required for AI-focused NPUs and processing technology are also increasing costs. In addition, factors like currency exchange rates (INR vs USD) also affect smartphone prices in the Indian market.

In the future, prices may reduce slightly if new factories start production. However, immediate price drops are unlikely.
